A 4.2-magnitude earthquake centered in the East Bay hills awakened people this morning in much of the Bay Area.

The quake happened at 4:42 a.m. with an epicenter 2 miles northeast of Oakland, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no reports of injuries or major damage, but Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said power was knocked out to about 1,400 customers, mostly in the East Bay hills, in the minutes after the quake struck. The temblor also caused a widespread outage in downtown Oakland, according to KCBS.

BART briefly halted service while it checked tracks for damage. Trains have resumed normal service.
