WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and White House national security advisers past and present have held a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the White House Situation Room.
The White House says Obama thanked Situation Room staff and celebrated the famous secure communications room in the White House basement as "the nerve center for the U.S. government." Obama and top advisers were in the room this month as the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden unfolded.
Obama also held a ceremony naming a secure conference room within the Situation Room after President John F. Kennedy, the "father of the Situation Room," the White House said.
Caroline Kennedy, his daughter, attended, as did more than a dozen current and former advisers including Henry Kissinger, Brent Scowcroft, John Poindexter and Zbigniew Brzezinski.
