WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is calling on Syrian President Bashar Assad to deliver on his promises of meaningful reform following a wave of protests.

In a statement, the White House says Assad has a responsibility to take concrete steps and actions that lead to democracy and greater freedom for his people.

Assad announced limited steps toward reform this week, saying he was forming committees to look into civilian deaths and the possibility of replacing Syria's despised emergency laws. Dozens of people have been killed in two weeks of demonstrations.

The protests are the most serious challenge yet to the four-decade rule of the Assad family.
