If President Barack Obama’s bid for a second term is going to be successful, he faces a long, hard fight, according to a new Newsmax online poll.

The survey of more than 2 million respondents found that only 28% plan to vote to re-elect Obama.

Respondents expressed widespread dissatisfaction with Obama’s policies, specifically his choice to give amnesty to illegal aliens and his healthcare reform plan that removes $500 billion from Medicare.

Meanwhile, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is also leading in other major tracking polls. According to polling data collected by Rasmussen, Gallup and Fox News, Romney is the clear front-runner in all three.

And since former candidate Rick Santorum dropped out of the race, Romney has been picking up key endorsements at a dizzying pace.

Recent supporters include House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

“Our party must aggressively pursue the conservative Democrats and independents needed to ensure Barack Obama is a one-term president. America cannot afford another four years of Barack Obama,” Graham said.
In the end, the election will simply come down to economic growth and job creation. In a recent Pew Research Center poll, voters listed the economy and jobs as the top issues in choosing whom to support as president.

With that said, in a recent Newsmax poll, readers were asked if they thought Obama was capable of restarting the economy. A staggering 89% of the respondents said … no.

In other words, Obama has a much tougher mountain to climb than he did four years ago.

And despite Obama’s past attraction for voters, political analysts say Americans are now judging him on his policies, not his personality.

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, insists this year’s election will be far from a popularity contest. He says the economy will undoubtedly determine the winner.

“Does anybody think Nixon was more likable than Hubert Humphrey?

Does anybody think Jimmy Carter was a better drinking buddy than Gerald Ford?

Everybody cites ‘I like Ike,’ but that’s not why Eisenhower won,” Sabato suggests.

Personal attributes and likability, he claims, only become critical when the economy isn’t in the toilet.

2012 looks very much like the year of the economy – and according to the polls, a year of change.
