Missouri lawmakers have enacted new religious exemptions from insurance coverage of birth control by overriding a gubernatorial veto.
The vote Wednesday appeared to mark the first time a state has directly rebutted a policy by President Barack Obama's administration requiring insurers to cover contraception.
But the new Missouri law is quickly being hit with a lawsuit.
An attorney for a Kansas City labor coalition said it is seeking an injunction against the measure. Among other things, the lawsuit claims the Missouri measure conflicts with Obama's health care law.
The new Missouri law allows individuals, employers and insurers to cite religious or moral exemptions from mandatory insurance coverage for abortion, contraception and sterilization.
