Mexico’s president-elect has given the thumbs-up to President Barack Obama’s plans to reform immigration laws.

“We fully support your proposal,” Enrique Peña Nieto said during a Tuesday meeting with Obama at the White House.

Peña Nieto is due to be inaugurated in Mexico City on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden will attend.

“We only send the vice president to inaugurations if your county is at the very top of the list,” Obama told Peña Nieto. Obama said he would visit the country next year for the North American Leaders Summit. “Any excuse to go to Mexico,” he said. “I’m always game.”

Peña Nieto’s election marks a return to power of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party, the PRI, that held power for 71 years before crashing to defeat in 2000.

Obama praised outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon, for establishing "an excellent working relationship” with the United States and said he looked forward to working with Peña Nieto on issues including the Mexican border. Mexico, he said, has become an “important multilateral, multinational partner.”
