As John Edwards faces charges of conspiracy, accepting illegal campaign contributions and perjury, The Atlantic Wire reports there may be some hope he can evade the most serious charges.

Among them, the federal prosecutors handling the Edwards case are the same as the ones who famously botched the 2009 case against the late Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska.

However, the worst news is that the charges against Edwards will come down to precedents set by tough federal elections commission rulings --- and whether or not he accepted gifts considered campaign contributions while running for a federal office.

So how good is the case against Edwards? Right now, it's a toss up.
