Ex-Pentagon Official: Drone on Iranian TV Possibly Fake

Thursday, 15 December 2011 10:16 AM EST

The unmanned U.S. drone that Iran has been parading before state television cameras may be a fake. Iran says it captured the RQ-170 Sentinel spy plane by taking control of it electronically, USA Today reported.

However, a former Pentagon official says the aircraft appears to be a fake. The official examined the video that Iran aired and concluded that not only is the drone the wrong color but the wing joints are not the right type for stealth craft, the paper reported.

Previous reports have revealed the drone was operated by the CIA and was monitoring Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The drone, made by Lockheed Martin and equipped with a special coating and shape designed to evade detection, apparently crashed.
