DES MOINES, Iowa — Two Republican officials say Matt Strawn will step down as chairman of Iowa's Republican Party, possibly as early as Tuesday.
The officials say party leaders were unhappy with Strawn's handling of the disputed results from the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses.
They noted that Strawn declared Mitt Romney the winner on caucus night by eight votes, but initially wouldn't declare a winner two weeks later when a recount showed Rick Santorum with a 34-vote edge. Santorum later was declared the winner.
The officials requested anonymity to speak because the party had yet to make a formal announcement. They said Strawn had planned to resign at a party meeting on Feb. 11, but now say the announcement could come as early as Tuesday.
