Sen. Jim Inhofe tells Newsmax.TV that, as the November election approaches, President Barack Obama won’t be able to escape blame for rising gasoline prices because he already has acknowledged that his energy policies will lead to higher costs for energy.
The Oklahoma Republican also says the Obama administration has been waging “a war on fossil fuel,” blocking the development of America’s resources in hopes of promoting green energy.
Inhofe, who was elected in 1994, is the ranking Republican on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. A longtime critic of manmade global warming claims, he is the author of the just-published book “The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens your Future.”
During an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, Inhofe was asked how high he believes gasoline prices will go if the administration keeps on its current course.
“I’d say probably $5” a gallon, he says.

“It’s supply and demand. Even Obama said recently that prices are going to have to go up. I agree with that so long as you don’t allow us to develop our own resources.
“He said he’s been trying to work with companies to develop more fossil resources, and it’s just not true.
“This has been a war on fossil fuel. They want to stop America from developing our own resources.
“It is important that people realize that we in the United States have the largest recoverable reserves of coal, oil and natural gas of anyplace in the world. All we have to do is just produce our own coal, oil and gas and we can be completely free of the Middle East.
“President Obama will say, ‘I want natural gas, but I’m against hydraulic fracturing.’ Well, you can’t get natural gas and oil out of tight formations without using that process.
“So it’s consistent: They want to kill gas, oil and coal in hopes that they’ll be able to get their beautiful green energy up and running someday. In the meantime, you’ve got to run that machine called the United States of America.”
Inhofe discusses how rising gas prices probably will affect Obama’s re-election chances.
“First of all, he’s going to try and hide and blame it on somebody else. But he can’t do that because he has made too many statements. He said under his plan of cap-and-trade prices will necessarily skyrocket. So we’re going to play these [statements] back over and over again.
“Cap and trade has a direct relationship to the price of gas at the pump because what they’re trying to do is regulate CO2 at all institutions. What people are not aware of is what it is costing the American people for all his overregulation.
“We won the battle and were able to defeat all of these cap-and-trade bills that would have cost the American people between $300 billion and $500 billion a year. Now he’s trying to do that through regulation. That’s going on today.
“In fact, a court in Washington is looking at that now to see if [the EPA has the authority to regulate greenhouse-gas missions], a position that “relies on the United Nations science which has been completely debunked.”
Capping emissions through regulation would cost the country “far more” than the $300 billion to $500 billion a year it would cost through cap-and-trade legislation, Inhofe says.
“The reason is the legislation would only require the emission controls on elements that are emitting 25,000 tons of CO2 a year or more. However when you get into doing it through regulation and the Clean Air Act, that would [impact] anyone emitting 250 tons — that is every school, every church, every hospital in America. And they admit they would have to hire 250,000 more people just to regulate the CO2 emissions.”
In “The Greatest Hoax,” Inhofe asserts that Al Gore and other climate change crusaders, including the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have been totally discredited. He was asked why environmental extremists are continuing their fight.
“In my book, I mention MoveOn and George Soros and Michael Moore and the Hollywood elite and all that,” he responds. “There’s a lot of resources there and they have this commitment. Their crown jewel of regulation is to regulate CO2, and so while everything I’ve said is true, they can [promote] the regulation because they don’t have to have concurrence of the Senate and the House to do that.
“There’s a very well-known scientist, Richard Lindzen of MIT, who said the bureaucrat’s dream is to regulate carbon. If you control carbon you control life.”
Inhofe also criticizes the Obama administration’s decision not to approve construction of Keystone XL pipeline bringing oil from Canada to America’s Gulf Coast.
“The president says he wants to promote energy and yet he won’t let us open a pipeline that comes down from the Alberta sands, and the far left is saying that is going to stop [Canada] from developing it. Well, it won’t. All they’ll do is send it to China from the West Coast of Canada.
“China is waiting for us to close down the opportunity to send it down to the United States so that we can use it because they want to use it.
“We’re in competition with China all over the world. And if there’s anything we shouldn’t do, it is close our pipeline so they can send it to China to help their economy.”
Inhofe concludes: “This president is doing everything he can to stop us from developing, from drilling offshore, drilling in the Gulf, drilling in ANWR, drilling on public lands — in all these places where we have these huge recoverable reserves.”
