Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano “doesn’t even have a clue” on whether the nation’s borders are safe from illegal immigration, Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert told veteran radio host Steve Malzberg on Tuesday.

“If somebody’s going to require a certification of the border being safe, I know, personally, Louie Gohmert would not trust Janet Napolitano because she doesn’t even have a clue,” the Republican congressman told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV. “I wouldn’t expect her to have a clue, since she doesn’t even have a clue here.”

Malzberg’s show, which airs from New York, premiered on Monday and is broadcast by Newsmax Media Inc. It will be carried live on SiriusXM’s Channel 166 nationwide, and will soon air on major terrestrial radio stations. The show can be seen live on Newsmax’s website.

On Monday, Napolitano toured Mexico’s border with the U.S., noting that the “incredible” spending by the United States has contributed to greater enforcement, 40-year lows in “illegal immigration numbers,” and relatively low violent crime rates in such major border cities as San Diego and El Paso, Texas.

“What we have seen now compared to 20 years ago is like the difference between a rocket ship and a horse and buggy,” Napolitano said on Monday after a helicopter tour of the border.

Napolitano’s statements were woefully devoid of credibility, Gohmert told Malzberg.

“They would be more believable if she would send her vast federal protection — armed protection — away for four hours and stand out there by herself,” he said. “That would be more believable, but the ranchers that I talk to from south Texas, they say they fear for their lives.

“It’s gotten violent. There’s drugs coming through. You’ve got al-Qaida coming across, so it is not a safe border.

“Her statements are an impediment to security, because it makes people think it’s safe when it absolutely is not,” Gohmert, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, told Malzberg. “Don’t make the mistake of allowing one bureaucrat to say it’s safe — and that kicks in all of the triggers.”

The Judiciary Committee, meanwhile, held its first meetings on immigration on Tuesday. This is the core issue, Gohmert said: “Are we going to be a nation of laws, where the rule of law matters and applies to everybody or are we not?

“We’ve got some things we can work out and agree on,” he said.
