Republicans are in danger of losing their power and Democrats could become a near-permanent majority if the GOP doesn’t conduct a major overhaul on its party operations, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has warned.

In a letter Friday to Republican National Committee members, Gingrich, who failed in his bid for the Republican nomination for president this year, warned that the “Clinton-Obama majority could become as dominant as the Roosevelt majority was from 1932 to 1968 presidentially and from 1930 to 1994 in the House of of Representatives.”

Gingrich’s letter, reported in The Hill, was sent to warn that the GOP needs a major overhaul, and said he’ll spend several months working with the RNC on the project.

Gingrich said there are 25 issues the party should address, including more work to include minority communities, a push for the party to compete in big cities and a refusal to ignore parts of the country that lean Democratic.

Meanwhile, he said Republican nominee Mitt Romney wasn’t the problem in the election, but his infamous “47 percent” comment was troublesome because it “reflected a deep belief by many conservatives and Republican consultants, campaign professionals, staffs, and activists.”

Gingrich also called for the GOP to end its “red-versus-blue” campaigns.

“What would a 100 percent Republican Party be like if we planned 2014 and 2016 with no reference to red or blue states or counties?” Gingrich wrote. “It is true that President Obama ran a deliberate class warfare divisive campaign. However, if you analyze his winning coalition it is amazing how many components were bonded by micro-communities and a sense of inclusiveness that transcended a narrowly class warfare approach. We have to understand this pattern of defining differences while being openly inclusive."
