Florida Gov. Rick Scott sounded off on the administration’s proposal to waive the 16-year-old welfare-to-work requirements, saying the broadening of the law “doesn’t make any sense.”
The Republican, appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” said such an expansion would be better suited for the state Medicaid program.
“This is just another government program where the federal government will run out of money, and they’ll put it on the states again,” said Scott, referring to the proposal that authorizes states to try new methods to get welfare recipients back to work.
“We can’t afford it in Florida. Give us the flexibility to fix our Medicaid program, but don’t force us into a program that the federal government, we know, can’t even afford,” he said.
On the topic of the presidential race, Scott said Florida voters will base their decision on the candidate with the best jobs plan.
“This race is going to be just like my race in 2010,” he said. “It’s going to be 100-percent based on who’s got the right jobs plan. It’s going to be about jobs.”
