House Speaker John Boehner said today there’s “enough common ground” to gain passage soon of an extension of a payroll-tax cut and expanded unemployment benefits.

Boehner, of Ohio, said a payroll-tax cut extension would help the economy because it keeps money in people’s pockets. Still, he said in Washington that the cost should be offset to preserve the Social Security trust fund, which is funded by the payroll tax.

The speaker also said an extension of the unemployment benefits should be offset with spending cuts.
