Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday told a group of Evangelical Christians in South Carolina that his top two rivals for the GOP presidential nomination have the same position on same-sex marriage as President Barack Obama.
Cruz spoke at the Carolina Values Summit, where he called last year's Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage "lawless" and "judicial activism,"
Politico reports.
Cruz did not name businessman Donald Trump and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by name, but it was clear who he meant when he said, "There is something profoundly wrong when Republican presidential candidates are repeating Barack Obama’s talking points on gay marriage, saying, 'we surrender, we give up.'"
His opponents have "gone soft," Cruz said, according to
WCNC.
Trump and Rubio both oppose same-sex marriage, but have said they would abide by the ruling since it is "the law of the land."
"Those are the talking points of Barack Obama," Cruz said. "You might as well light the White House up in rainbow colors."
Trump responded on Twitter, calling Cruz a liar.
