Donohue: Left Will Have Conniption Fit Over Benedict’s Successor

By    |   Monday, 11 February 2013 11:36 AM EST

Liberals within the Catholic Church may be happy to see Pope Benedict XVI resign his papacy, but America’s fieriest Catholic conservative commentator says the end result will depress those who seek radical change within the Catholic Church.

“I have no idea who will be elected by the Cardinals to replace Pope Benedict, but I can make one clear prediction,” Bill Dohonue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights told Newsmax in an exclusive interview on Monday.

“Whoever is chosen, the left will have another conniption fit, they are going to be in a state of severe depression, we’re gonna have a suicide watch. There will be the equivalent of S.W.A.T. teams bringing then into the asylum.”

Donohue remembers the reaction of prominent Catholic liberal and author of racy bestselling novels, Fr. Andrew Greeley, with the election of Joseph Ratzinger as Pope in 2005. “God bless him because he is ill right now,” Donohue said. “But Fr Greeley said we could get a reign of terror in the Catholic Church.”

And Donohue also recalls that former liberal Notre Dame University theologian Richard McBrien promised that “Ratzinger is the one person they won’t choose.”

Donohue promises, “You’re gonna see a lot of hyperventilation. You’re gonna see hysteria” from liberals in the upcoming conclave next month.

The feisty in-demand TV commentator and author of “The Politics of the American Civil Liberties Union,” "Secular Sabotage,” and most recently “Why Catholicism Matters,” told Newsmax that Pope Benedict “made the right move given his condition, and it definitely demonstrates his humility.

“He stands in stark contrast to the egocentric leaders we see in the world today, including celebrities, athletes and other public figures. He did the right thing because his interest is the Catholic Church, not himself.”
