New York City's iconic Halloween parade proceeded Tuesday night amid heavy security following a suspected lone wolf terrorist rampage that killed eight people just blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks.
The parade through Greenwich Village stepped off about a mile from where a rented Home Depot pickup truck mowed down pedestrians and cyclists on a busy bike path in lower Manhattan alongside the Hudson River.
Parade goers cheered the mounted police officers who led the parade.
The New York Police Department added extra officers, heavy weapons teams and sand trucks as protective blockers along the parade route, and officials emphasized that New Yorkers should feel safe, ABC 7 New York reported.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told residents to go about their business and not be deterred by the attack, while New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited the route as the parade began, ABC News reported.
