A writer for The Washington Post Tuesday backed CNN correspondent Jim Sciutto's asking Donald Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson about a necklace made of bullets after an interview about the Republican front-runner's attacks on former President Bill Clinton.

"Sciutto's inquiry seems fair, since the nature of his question is about an apparent political statement made through the necklace, as opposed to some shallow curiosity about Pierson's fashion sense," writer Callum Borchers said. "Trump has positioned himself as a staunch supporter of gun rights, boasting that he sometimes carries a concealed weapon."
Pierson was interviewed on the CNN program "The Lead," Borchers reports. After Sciutto finished, the national security correspondent sent her this tweet:
She then responded that it was real ammunition in support of small-business owners:

While the necklace raised a bit of stir on Twitter — both for and against — Borchers questioned why would Sciutto raise the question without appearing sexist.

He noted that Sciutto was right to ask the question, given that an interview about Trump's attacks on Clinton's past indiscretions could now be asked because his would soon campaign for his wife, Hillary, the Democratic front-runner.

He also noted that Pierson's wearing of the jewelry had come a day after an Ohio grand jury announced that it would not charge a white police officer in the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.

"Analysis of the decision featured prominently on CNN and other cable news networks Tuesday," Borchers said.
