Democrat Hillary Clinton leads Republican Donald Trump by seven percentage points among early voters in Ohio, though Trump leads among voters overall, according to the latest William & Mary/TargetSmart poll.
Among those who already have cast their ballots in the crucial battleground state, Clinton leads 48 percent to Trump's 41 percent, TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier said Sunday on MSNBC's "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell."
But the poll gives Trump a 6-point advantage (44 percent to 38 percent) among Ohioans who have not yet voted, making for a 3-point overall advantage. Trump leads Clinton 43-40 overall.
"I would call that lead very tenuous at this point based on what we've seen in the early vote," Bonier said. "We haven't taken what we have learned, frankly, from the early vote. We aren't going out and looking at Election Day in our survey and putting our finger on the scale and saying, well, this electorate will clearly be more favorable to Secretary Clinton because of what we've seen in the early vote, but I think it is safe to say that the signs are very strong for Secretary Clinton in what they've seen in the early vote."
