Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain delivered an unequivocal response to President Obama’s State of the Union address and his claims that the nation is thriving: Mr. President, Americans are not stupid.
He also said in his address carried live on
Newsmax that Obama is in denial about the “nightmare scenario” facing the country unless there are fundamental changes in Washington.
Cain, who withdrew from the GOP race in December, spoke on behalf of the tea party movement, delivering his response in an address at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Tea Party Express.

“In the president’s speech tonight we heard more well-scripted rhetoric,” the business executive and syndicated columnist declared.
“We heard more proclamations of how well we are doing in certain areas. We heard more promises of working on various problems. We heard more class warfare where the president and his administration still want to manipulate the tax code and pick winners and losers. We heard more excuses and blames and attacks on businesses and on Congress for what they have not done.
“The speech came across as a hodgepodge of liberal ideas — no big ideas that would fundamentally change how things work in Washington.”
What we did not hear from Obama, Cain said, was the truth about the unemployment problem, America’s “anemic” economic growth, high gasoline prices, and out-of-control spending that is a “national disgrace.”
We also did not hear how Obamacare is “coming up short” in its promise to bring down healthcare costs, Cain observed.
“And so I say in response, on behalf of the tea party and citizen people across the country, with all due respect, Mr. President, some of us are not stupid. The state of the union is not good.
“We want common sense solutions. That’s how we do it outside of Washington, and we happen to believe that we need more common sense solutions inside Washington.”
Cain said that despite Obama’s efforts, “we can’t spend our way to prosperity and can’t tax our way out of debt.”
He continued: “We deserve a balanced budget, period. We have been on this path of spending for decades now and our elected leaders including the president have got to get serious about a balanced budget.
“We deserve a government that listens to its people rather than ignores its people.
“We deserve a brighter future for our grandchildren instead of the nightmare scenario we have been facing that the president is in denial of.
“Washington is out of touch with the people because there are times they forget that they work for us. We must remind them.
“We the people are coming — that’s the tea party message.
“We want our power back.”
In a question-and-answer session that followed Cain’s address, he returned to a previous theme, saying that attacks against presidential candidate Newt Gingrich before the South Carolina primary “backfired because the American voters are saying, ‘We ain’t stupid.’
“They know it was well timed and planned, and people are waking up to the dirty side of politics. And this is why, even in Florida, Newt’s surge continues.”
