LIGNET: China Gears Up for Leadership Change

The Chinese government is preparing for a once-in-a-decade leadership transition by silencing anti-government activists and bolstering Internet censorship. The Ministry of Information Technology reportedly plans to "seal the network" and keep all activists under house arrest until new leaders are named. Authorities are also attacking private services that enable Chinese Internet users to evade the government Internet firewall. All these are signs that while China’s middle class has grown exponentially in the last 10 years, its growth as a nation remains stunted by the communist party, which maintains an iron grip over the people. But it’s possible that change is brewing just below the hard-polished surface, and that China, under its new leaders, will slowly transition away from authoritarianism.
