By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 11:32 PM EST

Delaware has been attributed for being in the middle of it all. Despite big hiring from its top companies, the Blue Hen State rules the roost for jobs.

These are the top five employers in Delaware, according to a 2013 list published in the Newark Post.

1. State of Delaware

While the state is leading the region in jobs added in the economic recovery, according to The News Journal, the state government still employs the most people in Delaware. A combined 13,000 people are employed by state agencies, the Newark Post reported.

2. Christiana Care Health System

Located and headquartered in Wilmington, Christiana Care Health System has been ranked one of the nation’s largest medical centers and is listed as 22nd for admissions. The nonprofit organization is a teaching hospital that houses more than 250 residents and fellows.

The jewel of the Christiana Care System is the Christiana Hospital, which brings modern, state-of-the-art medicine to Newark, Delaware. The facility includes the state’s only Level 1 trauma center and is situated to provide care for the most severe emergencies. The 1.3 million-square-foot facility houses 913 beds.

Christiana Care employs more than 10,000 throughout the state.

3. DuPont Co.

DuPont's economic impact on Delaware has lessened in recent years but, historically, it is one of Delaware's top employers.

The innovative chemical manufacturer was founded in 1802 by E.I. DuPont. The French émigré started the company to make explosive powders, according to the company's history.

5. US 436 Military Airlift Wing

Dover Air Force Base is located in the state capital and at the center of the Delmarva Penisula — Delaware, Maryland, Virginia — and it operates the largest and busiest air freight terminal in the Department of Defense.

Dover AFB services the United States military’s only mortuary unit and is hosted by the 436th Airlift Wing.

According its website, "the Dover Air Force Base workforce consists of 6,400 military personnel: 3,900 active duty, 1,500 reservists and 1,000 civilians. It also supports approximately 5,100 family members."
