Are Smart Guns a Slippery Slope to Gun Control?

It may come as a surprise to learn that the idea of smart gun technology is not a new concept, the earliest one, dating back to 1975. Since that time, a few gun makers and typically anti-gun proponents have tried and failed to bring smart gun technology to market.

Gun proponents, constitutionalists and those true to our country’s values and traditions simply aren’t interested in any further restrictions on America’s second amendment, and they see smart gun technology as a slippery slope to further gun control.

Armatix, a German company and developer of the new iP1 watch/smart gun system are currently marketing to gun stores in the United States. One California store, Oak Tree Gun Club, recently faced a huge backlash when it announced plans to start selling the Armatix smart gun.

Gun proponents made their voices heard loud and clear on the store’s forum and social media pages, and the gun club immediately decided to back away from selling the gun, according to Fox News.

Per the National Rifle Association, there are currently over 20,000 gun laws on the books today. Those were probably well-intentioned laws to halt criminals at some point. The reality is that gun control, even by way of smart guns, only punishes law abiding gun owners, as criminals don’t follow laws.

To put it in perspective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013 the United States had over 100 million gun owners, when you compare that to the 11,208 gun homicides in that same year, gun deaths are only a fraction of 1 percent.

Gun owners aren’t at all opposed to the advancements in firearm technology. What they don’t want is technology that could infringe further on their Second Amendment rights.
