New Jersey abortion laws are fairly permissive compared to other states in the nation, but not far outside the bounds of New Jersey's neighboring states' abortion laws.
Pro-life and pro-choice groups both consider the laws restricting abortions in New Jersey to be relatively limited.
The pro-choice group NARAL gives the state an “A-minus" grade for its laws pointing out that the legislature has passed several anti-abortion laws which courts in the state have struck down.
In its 2014 report card, Americans United for Life ranked New Jersey 45th in the list of states that had pro-life laws. The group cites legislation supporting embryonic research as well as the lack of laws to recognize unborn children as the victims of crime as reasons for putting the state at the bottom of its list.

Pennsylvania has considerably more restrictions on abortions than New Jersey.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, Pennsylvania has a waiting period of 24 hours after an initial consultation before an abortion can be performed. The state requires parental consent before a minor can get an abortion and prohibits abortions after 24 weeks of gestation.
New York also prohibits abortions after 24 weeks of gestation, but does not require parental notification or any kind of a waiting period.
Delaware limits abortions after the point of “viability,” which is similar to the 24-week law. Delaware only requires parental notification, not consent for a minor to receive an abortion. The Delaware statutes are similar to those in Maryland.
Connecticut has no waiting periods or restrictions on parental notification or consent for minors, but also limits abortions after “viability.”
