The years 2014 and 2015 are hosting a series of lunar eclipses that some Christians say are just the latest signs that Jesus is coming soon.
The rare series of four total lunar eclipses started on April 14, 2014 and ends on Sept. 28, 2015 — the date proponents of the blood moon prophecy believe scripture points to as proof that Jesus is coming soon. Pastor John Hagee, author of "Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change," told
CBN News, “There's a sense in the world that things are changing and God is trying to communicate with us in a supernatural way."
While Hagee stops short of proclaiming Sept. 28, 2015 as the date of the second coming, he does outline a historic basis for belief that the date will be spiritually significant.

Mark Biltz with
El Shaddai Ministries has been preaching the same ideas since 2008. He sees a special significance between the occurrence of these lunar eclipses on Jewish holy days. He based his beliefs in part on biblical scripture of
Joel 2:31 which says, “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.”
Other believers, such as Christian apologist and filmmaker Chris White, totally debunk belief in the blood moon prophecy. Some reasons that the theory does not line up with biblical prophecy are:
- The stars are included with the sun and moon: In addition to the sun and moon going dark, the stars will also go dark. It will be something more than an eclipse. Universal darkness that would also include an earthquake. The sun would not turn dark during a lunar eclipse.
- The four lunar eclipses in sequence have happened many times through history; they are called tetrads. Biltz's and Hagee's claims are based in part on evidence that Israel has seen historic changes during past tetrads. White says the dates don’t actually line up; they are off by months or even hundreds of years, and there have been tetrads where nothing of significance happened.
- The Jewish calendar is lunar, which means lunar eclipses often happen on Jewish feast days — slightly more than 15 percent of the time in the last 100 years. The fact that these lunar eclipses are on Jewish feast days is not particularly unique.
