The decrease of Antarctica’s sea ice has been one of the much-debated factors attributed to global warming, and deniers and believers can’t reach agreement on whether the ice is actually decreasing or what is causing the changes.

Skeptical Science explained the reason for the confusion. Land ice in Antarctica is melting, the organization said, but during the winter months, the sea ice is increasing.

“Skeptic arguments that Antarctica is gaining ice frequently hinge on an error of omission, namely ignoring the difference between land ice and sea ice,” the website said. “Antarctic land ice is the ice which has accumulated over thousands of years on the Antarctica landmass itself through snowfall. This land ice therefore is actually stored ocean water that once fell as precipitation. Sea ice in Antarctica is quite different as it is ice which forms in salt water primarily during the winter months. When land ice melts and flows into the oceans global sea levels rise on average; when sea ice melts sea levels do not change measurably.”

Still, when reports come in that sea ice is increasing, many global warming deniers jump to the conclusion that all the reports on rising sea levels are false.

Here are tweets about Antarctic and its ice situation from global warming deniers and believers:
