6 Vaccinations You Should Get Before Traveling to South Africa

Before trading those dollars in for the South African rand and exploring Kruger National Park’s wildlife, make sure to get all the vaccinations needed.

South Africa is the most modern country on its continent, according to Lark Tours. With cities, beaches, national park, and forests to enjoy, travelers have praised the nation’s beauty, but without proper precautions, visitors can fall ill when exposed to the new surroundings.

The World Health Organization reported 300,000 cases of yellow fever occurring each year, leading to 30,000 deaths, and 90 percent of these cases are found in Africa. Fortunately, however, there is a vaccine accessible.

Here are six shots the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends those traveling to South Africa get in addition to routine vaccinations.

1. Hepatitis A
This is recommended for most travelers, even those with standard schedules and accommodations. Hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food and water and person-to-person contact.

2. Hepatitis B
This is recommended for most travelers, especially those who may be exposed to any sort of body fluids.

3. Malaria
While there is no malaria vaccination, those traveling to the northeastern part of South Africa should get antimalarial medications before traveling as the disease is found in the KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga Provinces, which includes Kruger National Park. Malaria is carried by mosquitoes.

4. Rabies
Those who will be involved in outdoor activities or may make contact with dogs, bats, and other animals should get the shot. It is highly recommended for children because they are at a higher risk as well. Mammal bites spread the disease.

5. Typhoid
This disease is spread through contaminated food and water, so it is recommended most travelers get vaccinated, especially if visitors are spending time in smaller villages or rural areas.

6. Yellow Fever
The WHO requires this vaccination if a person is planning to travel from a country with risk of YFV transmission, which includes South Africa. It is spread by mosquitos’ bites.
