Greek Opinion Poll Shows 78% Want Greece to Remain in Euro Area

A majority of Greeks want any new government to do whatever possible to keep Greece in the euro, an opinion poll by Kapa Research showed.

Seventy-eight percent of the 1,007 Greeks surveyed for the To Vima newspaper supported keeping the country in the currency union, compared with 12.9 percent who preferred a return to the drachma, according to the poll, received by email today.

Seven in 10 want political parties to make concessions so that a coalition government can be formed, compared with 22.9 percent who preferred new elections to be held, the poll showed. Syriza, the second-biggest party, would come first in any new election, garnering 20.5 percent, the poll showed.

The survey was conducted on May 9 and May 10 and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
