As Memorial Day approaches, personal finance website WalletHub rates Wyoming as the best state for military retirees.

WalletHub used 19 metrics to determine its rankings, including taxes on military benefits, veteran job opportunities and number of Veterans Administration health facilities.

Wyoming is followed by New Hampshire, Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

California heads the bottom of the rankings, preceded by New York, Indiana, Arizona and Illinois.

WalletHub asked several experts what veterans should look for in choosing a retirement location.
  • "Medical care, VA hospitals, warm weather to reduce stress and transportation difficulties posed by weather," said Gregory Huckabee of the University of South Dakota.
  • "Where you would most like to live, proximity to family or concentration of friends, places with greater tax benefits for military veterans, places with activities you enjoy," said Donald Guter of South Texas College of Law.
  • "Access to a military facility that has a commissary, PX, pharmacy and a retirement center. The primary factors will be the same as civilian retirees: weather, family, cost-of-living, access to recreation, etc.," said Gregory Travalio of Ohio State University.
Meanwhile, the White House is under fire amid allegations of misconduct at the nation's Veterans Affairs hospitals.

"The election of President Obama ushered in a new era of big government and with it a renewed flurry of mismanagement," House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, said in a statement, The New York Times reports.

"If the president truly did not know about these scandals and mistakes, we should doubt his ability to properly manage the leviathan government that he helped create."
