If it feels like your weekly Trader Joe’s run hurts less than a trip to other grocery stores, you’re not imagining it — and now the data backs you up.

Trader Joe’s has officially been crowned America’s favorite supermarket, edging out longtime darling Publix in a nationwide customer satisfaction survey, the New York Post reports.

According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, Trader Joe’s scored 86 points, up from last year and good enough to take the top spot among U.S. grocers.

That’s no small feat in an era of stubborn food inflation, where shoppers are scrutinizing receipts like never before.

The California-based chain — famous for its quirky private-label products, cheerful crew members, and those instantly recognizable tote bags — managed to climb to No. 1 despite having far fewer stores than rivals like Publix and Costco.

Trader Joe’s operates just over 600 locations in 43 states, compared with Publix’s 1,400-plus stores concentrated in the Southeast.

So what’s the secret?

For many shoppers, it’s the combination of predictable prices, smaller store layouts that curb impulse buying, and a curated product lineup that cuts out expensive national brands.

You don’t walk out of Trader Joe’s with 12 kinds of ketchup — just one that’s cheap, decent, and oddly beloved.

Publix, which held the top spot last year, slipped to 84 points, while Texas favorite H-E-B came in close behind. Costco held steady at 81, Target slid slightly to 79, and Walmart stayed flat at 75, even as it prepares for a leadership transition with a new CEO.

Not everyone had a great year. Wegmans saw the sharpest drop in satisfaction, falling five points, while only three grocers — Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, and Save-A-Lot — actually improved their scores.

For budget-minded shoppers, the takeaway is simple: Americans are rewarding stores that make grocery shopping feel less painful.

Trader Joe’s doesn’t run flashy sales or loyalty apps, but it offers something increasingly rare — a cart that feels full without wrecking your checking account.

And yes, the cheeky tote bags.
