Americans can legally bet on the Oscars for the first time this year, thanks to the debut of sports betting in New Jersey, and the overwhelming favorite for best picture is “Roma.”

There’s little to be made, however, on the richly told film about a Mexican domestic servant. At 1-to-3 odds, you’d have to risk about $300 to win $100.

There’s more to be made on “Vice.” The film about former Vice President Dick Cheney has odds of 100-to-1, meaning a $100 bet would return $10,000, according to the latest odds. You can even wager on visual effects (the favorite there is “The Avengers: Infinity War”). Companies like FanDuel Inc. and DraftKings Inc. are taking action in the state -- both online and in person -- but only people physically present in New Jersey can play.

Betting on the Oscars has been available for years in countries such as the U.K through betting groups like William Hill Plc and Paddy Power Betfair Plc, majority owner of FanDuel. In Nevada, where sports betting has been legal for decades, regulators haven’t approved Oscar wagering.

The nascent sports-betting business has, in some high-profile cases, proved better for customers than bookies in the state, with FanDuel reporting losses of $5 million on the Super Bowl. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that allowed sports betting outside Nevada has set off a gold rush among casinos, online betting companies and sports teams.

The Academy Awards, which will be broadcast Feb. 24, are a popular office pool. For FanDuel, the most action has been in the best picture category, according to the company. Lady Gaga has been the most popular bet in the best actress category for her role in “A Star Is Born” even though Glenn Close is favored.
