Merkel Said to Be Ready to Back Lower Rates for Greece, Ireland

Thursday, 10 March 2011 01:21 PM EST

German Chancellor Angela Merkel today told lawmakers in parliament’s European Affairs Committee that she would back lower interest rates for aid extended to Greece and Ireland if Greece agrees to sell state assets and Ireland backs a common corporate tax base in the euro region, four lawmakers said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

Merkel linked Germany’s willingness to compromise to an agreement on a comprehensive package on the euro region debt crisis later this month.
