Germany is ready to do what’s needed to backstop the euro, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
The euro has proven itself and is “stable,” Merkel said in a speech in Frankfurt today. It helps secure jobs and economic growth in Germany, and is a “pillar” of economic success, she said.
“It’s fully clear that Germany has a fundamental interest and the obligation and a responsibility to contribute to securing the future of the euro,” Merkel said.
“That’s the central task that we have to tackle now. Everything that serves this goal will be done, and anything that doesn’t serve this goal will be left aside.”
