Billionaire Mark Cuban apparently holds quite a chunk of online-retail giant Amazon.com Inc.
“I have close to a billion dollars in Amazon stock,” Cuban said in a Fox Business Network interview. “It’s my biggest holding.”
Cuban told CNBC in May that Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN) were his two biggest holdings, but he didn’t at the time disclose the amount he held.
“It’s been that way for years,” he said at the time.
Last year, Cuban said he had “maybe four” dividend-owning stocks, two short positions and Netflix and Amazon.
Cuban also has openly discussed an independent bid for president, but he told Fox Business Network that his family “voted it down.”
“If you can change their mind, I’m all in,” the Dallas Mavericks owner told host Neil Cavuto.
In a wide-ranging interview:
- Cuban warned that when it comes to investing in China, U.S. businesses need to be vigilant. “It depends on the company,” he said in response to why businesses are holding back on capital spending. “If you have a global supply chain you need to be paying attention. If you do business with China or would like to do business with China, you need to be paying attention.”
- Cuban also raised questions about China trade negotiations. Although President Trump believes American companies will benefit from opening up market access to China, Cuban believes it will do the exact opposite. “The bigger question to me is what's the end game?” he said. “If President Xi called up and said yes, yes to everything President Trump whatever you want the answer is yes. Then what happens? You know you can make the argument that Ok if we completely open up China are we just going to move more factories to China now? Because if we're going to be selling a lot more China has a lot more people than we do. Why wouldn't, you know, factories just move there because it's more central to a bigger market.”
- He believes that all political parties should be done away with. “If it were up to me, I’d get rid of all political parties," Cuban told host Neil Cavuto. "You know, I think that’s a big source of the agita because everybody plays for their team. Everyone’s a bandwagon fan, and we don’t really get to talk about the issues." He says it would be more difficult for future presidents to lead effectively because people are so branded to their political identities.
- Cuban warned against a new California law that would allow athletes to profit from their likeness and sign endorsement deals. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill Monday.
- "My guess is, and this is only a guess, that the NCAA may implode, particularly as it applies to football," he said.
