Gallup Poll: Americans Feel 'Rich' at $150,000

Friday, 09 December 2011 08:31 AM EST

Most Americans deem themselves as "rich" when they earn at least $150,000 a year, a Gallup poll finds

While the poll finds the threshold to being "rich" comes to $150,000 on average, it also finds that 30 percent say less than $100,000 would be enough, including 18 percent who would consider themselves rich if they made less than $60,000 a year.

On the other hand, 15 percent say they would need to earn at least $1 million per year before thinking of themselves as rich.

Gallup said in a statement the poll sought to find who is "rich" in the United States at a time when policymakers debate income-tax and deficit-reduction policies and when Occupy Wall Street protestors blame the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans for being greedy.

Furthermore, most Americans have set the bar a little higher than in the past.

"Americans' perceptions of the annual income they need to be rich are a bit higher than in 2003, when Gallup last asked the question. Then, $120,000 a year was the median amount Americans said they would need to make in order to think of themselves as rich," Gallup says.

Taxes on the country's wealthy have taken center stage this year, as debate roils over whether to tax the wealthy more to narrow deficits and fund jobs programs for those deemed not so rich.

A new funding source, however, is gaining momentum — a tax on financial transactions such as stock trade, deemed a Robin Hood tax, where calls for it are already growing in Europe.

"There is some momentum behind this," says Simon Tilford, chief economist of the Center for European Reform in London, according to the New York Times.

"If they keep the show on the road, they probably will attempt to run with this."
