Facebook is putting its Instagram for kids project on hold, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, told NBC's “Today” show Monday.
As The New York Times reports, Facebook Inc.'s Instagram division has been working on a version for children under the age of 13 that would enable parents to see what their children are doing.
“I still firmly believe that it’s a good thing to build a version of Instagram that’s safe for tweens, but we want to take the time to talk to parents and researchers and safety experts and get to more consensus about how to move forward,” Mr. Mosseri reportedly said on "Today."
Lawmakers have been concerned the app could be detrimental to young people’s mental health. Last week, The Wall Street Journal published excerpts of internal Facebook memos indicating that the social media giant is aware that a large percentage of young its users, primarily teenage girls, consider committing suicide.
“We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls,” according to one 2019 slide the WSJ published.
