Elon Musk, in a late-night Tweet Wednesday, joked that, following his $44 billion bid for Twitter, he might buy other iconic American companies,
Fox Business reports.
"Next, I'm buying Coca-Cola to put the cocaine back in," the billionaire maverick quipped.
Invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton, Coca-Cola was first sold in 1886 for 5 cents a glass from a soda fountain in downtown Atlanta, according to
Coca-Cola.
Pemberton named his temperance drink Coca-Cola from two of its main ingredients: coca leaves, from which cocaine is produced, and Kola nuts, which produce caffeine. In 1903, Coca-Cola removed the nine milligrams of cocaine from its ingredients.
Musk's tweet inspired a dialogue with other Twitter users, one of whom posted a photo of one of the earliest bottles of Coca-Cola, from 1894.
Musk even shared a photoshopped image of himself with the caption, "Now I'm going to buy McDonald's and fix all of the ice cream machines," then adding, "Listen, I can't do miracles ok."
Earlier this week, after Twitter accepted Musk's $44 billion offer, he laid out his interest in reinforcing free speech as his reason for purchasing the social media platform, or, as Musk calls Twitter, the world's "digital town square."
"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," Musk said. "I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.
"Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it," Musk continued. "I hope that even my worst enemies remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means."
