Cullen Roche, founder of Orcam Financial Group, lists seven market myths that will cost you money in a column on MarketWatch.

1. "You too can be Warren Buffett. The myth of the simpleton from Omaha who just picks value stocks has driven an entire generation to fall for the myth that they can replicate what Buffett does," Roche writes.

2. "You get what you pay for." Fees are something to be limited, he says. "In finance, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better."

3. "You should focus either on fundamentals or technical analysis." Actually, both can be useful.

4. "The myth of passive investing. No one can realistically replicate the performance of a truly passive index over the long term."

5. "The stock market will make you rich." Building businesses makes people rich. Stocks "can protect your wealth," Roche writes.

6. "You have to beat the market." That's very unlikely to happen, and you could suffer major losses if you try.

7. "Stocks for the long run is the best strategy." There will be times when you need cash for the short run.

Meanwhile, Ron Carson, CEO of Carson Wealth Management Group, has three tips for those who started saving late for retirement or have suffered a financial setback that trimmed their retirement savings.

• "Increase income and savings.

• "Manage spending.

• "Increase investment return," he writes on CNBC.com.

As for income and savings, "in order to continue an income stream to contribute to retirement savings, some adults may need to work longer in life," Carson says.
