The Internet Got New Wings Today

The Internet Got New Wings Today

The FCC early Monday restored Internet freedom, officially clipping the wings of Barack Obama’s Net Neutrality law, which grounded the Internet with public utility rules since 2015.

America is now back to the light-touch model of regulation which made the Internet so great in the first place. This will promote broad-based investment, growth and prosperity for all Americans – not just the barons of Silicon Valley (which the previous law sought primarily to help).

Democrats and liberals – who see Net Neutrality as a campaign issue to attract millennials into their camp – have their undies in a twist over this, however. Senator Chuck Schumer (D, NY) warns that the change will bring an “end to the free and open internet.” Similarly, Bernie Sanders (Ind, VT) breathlessly declares that Net Neutrality’s repeal will “end of the internet as we know it.” And, former Democratic FCC Commissioner, Michael Copps, bellicosely predicts that a return to light-touch regulation “will cut the open internet off at the knees.”

This is all a bunch of hooey, of course. The Internet thrived precisely because utility regulation was absent. It returns to that trajectory today. Thankfully.

Undeterred, congressional Democrats are working to reinstate the Obama law via a legislative backdoor known as a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution. If successful, that maneuver would undo the Net Neutrality repeal, returning the Internet to Obama’s specious regulations. It passed the Senate in May, but now languishes in the House.

As to the House, Democrats there are getting desperate. They know the CRA is a bogus tactic and is doomed. Still, they’re doing everything they can to get the resolution through, even going so far as to enlist the gun control lobby for help. In this regard, leading Net Neutrality supporter, Representative Mike Doyle (D, PA), just last week exploited a meeting with child-advocate, David Hogg, essentially conflating gun control with Net Neutrality.

Tweets Doyle:

Just met with @davidhogg11 and students from #StonemanDouglas High School. They continue to advocate for action on important issues-including #NetNeutrality. We need to #SaveNetNeutrality in order to preserve the #Internet as a place to voice our concerns and organize for change. pic.twitter.com/mBVGE1KZtz

Keep it up, Mike. You’re shooting yourself and your party in the foot. In 280 characters, Doyle’s statement illustrates the whole lift-less liberal agenda. The two issues have a lot in common: Each targets your speech, your property, your liberty so progressive, “enlightened” elites can make America more “fair,” “better,” and “right” for, um, the collective.

Simply put, their world demands that you comply with their unyielding orthodoxy. Net Neutrality. Gun control. Etc., etc., etc. It’s all the same. You have no rights unless they say so.

By officially repealing Obama’s “organize-for-change” Net Neutrality, the FCC has cleared the flightpath for the Internet and the marketplace to grow and innovate again, free from Silicon Valley / Soros-funded digital Harpies and their fouling, authoritarian ideology.

Though it is only a piece of a bigger picture, with Internet freedom restored, Americans of all stripes will be better off.

The Internet did not end today. It got new wings.
