Can America Afford Any More Insurance?

By    |   Wednesday, 12 September 2012 07:43 AM EDT

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney seems to be advocating keeping the free stuff in Obamacare and getting rid of the individual mandate. Unfortunately, he failed to explain how we can afford a system where families can leave adult children on a policy as long as they’d like and where there are no pre-existing conditions clauses.

Romney, a successful businessman who knows there is no free lunch, is now looking at ways to give unemployed 30-year-olds free healthcare. Allowing parents to keep children on policies forever would lead to sick adult children seeking coverage on their parent’s group plans.

Since there is no way to do this for free, the cost would have to be spread among the rest of the policyholders. In this way, everyone gets to share the cost of healthcare for adult children who choose not to take care of themselves.

There are undoubtedly several tragedies in a country of 300 million citizens that would be averted under this plan. But the cost of insurance is becoming a budget buster for families, even without considering health insurance.

Homeowners with a car, a large group of Americans, are already spending about 5 percent of their income on home and auto insurance. State requirements make these policies more expensive by adding regulations to ease the burden on policyholders with claims whenever possible.

Every benefit has a cost, and ideally the cost should be paid by those gaining the benefit. Unfortunately, the costs are beginning to mount for those trying to be responsible. That will force them to make cutbacks, and families will either reduce spending on everyday needs or drop insurance coverage knowing they will be bailed out if necessary.

Soon, politicians might realize that only by eliminating pre-existing condition clauses from auto insurance can we truly allow every American to access the repair shop of their choice.

This is a logical extension of Romney’s healthcare proposals, but let’s hope he will not deliver on these campaign promises if elected.
