Salazar Pledges to Review Drilling Agency Methods

Friday, 14 May 2010 01:06 PM EDT

The Obama administration says it will review environmental procedures followed by the Minerals Management Service for offshore drilling.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Friday the review is part of the administration's efforts to tighten oversight of the minerals agency following the catastrophic Gulf Coast oil spill.

The review will focus on whether the agency is following all environmental laws before issuing permits for offshore oil and gas development.

The announcement comes as President Barack Obama pledged to end a "cozy relationship" between the oil industry and federal regulators that he said had existed for years and into his own administration.
