DNC Head Wasserman Schultz Blames Tea Party for Giffords Shooting

Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:33 PM EST

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz maligned the tea party when she reminded a New Hampshire audience of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords a year ago.

"We need to make sure that we tone things down, particularly in light of the Tucson tragedy from a year ago, where my very good friend, Gabby Giffords, who is doing really well, by the way,” was shot, said Rep. Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. "The discourse in America, the discourse in Congress in particular . . . has really changed, I'll tell you. I hesitate to place blame, but I have noticed it take a very precipitous turn towards edginess and lack of civility with the growth of the tea party movement."

She charged that tea party members have disrupted town hall meetings and added, "When they come and disagree with you, you're not just wrong, you're the enemy."

Jared Lee Loughner’s fusillade on Jan. 8, 2011, killed six and wounded a dozen others, including Giffords, during a gathering of supports for the Arizona Democrat.
