Tuesday, 30 April 2013 10:10 AM EDT

The New York Times posted an 18 percent gain in daily circulation over the past year as its online subscription program helped the paper outpace major U.S. rivals, according to the Alliance for Audited Media.

The growth vaulted the Times past Gannett Co.-owned USA Today to become the second-biggest daily U.S. newspaper, behind News Corp.’s Wall Street Journal, the Alliance for Audited Media said in a statement.
