EU Commission Hopeful on Bailout Deal for Greece

Monday, 22 March 2010 08:03 AM EDT

The European Union's commission says it is still hopeful that eurozone leaders can agree financial help for Greece this week despite a rebuff from Germany.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said a Thursday summit of EU leaders should not discuss a possible bailout because Greece isn't asking for one. She says putting it on the agenda would cause market turbulence by raising false expectations.

Greece has warned it may turn to the International Monetary Fund if it can't get help from other eurozone countries. It has said it is not looking for money but measures to convince markets it will not default.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has called on eurozone members to end market uncertainty and decide on ways to help Greece if necessary.
