An explosion early Sunday morning at a United States Steel Corp. plant near Detroit killed one worker and injured two others.
Steelmaking operations stopped, and the company said it was investigating the incident along with the United Steelworkers union and regulators.
Antonino Palazzolo, a 32-year-old remote-control locomotive operator who had worked at the company for almost two years, was killed in the explosion, according to an e-mailed statement from Courtney Boone, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh-based manufacturer. Two others had minor injuries and received medical treatment.
The company’s Great Lakes Works site, where the explosion occurred, is capable of about 3.8 million net tons of steelmaking per year, according to the company’s website. The plant is along the Detroit River in the Michigan towns of Ecorse and River Rouge.
