Pfizer Plans NYC Layoffs or Relocations

Tuesday, 11 May 2010 10:19 AM EDT

Drugmaker Pfizer Inc. plans to lay off or relocate some of its New York City employees.

Spokeswoman Joan Campion says she does not know the number of workers who'll be affected. She says the company is moving "a number" of people to New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Campion also says Pfizer has talked to the city about repaying tax incentives.

David Lombino, a spokesman for the Economic Development Corporation, says the city will try to recover double the $12 million in tax breaks Pfizer has used if it eliminates more than 450 jobs.

The company also is putting an office tower up for sale, but says its world headquarters will stay in Manhattan.

Pfizer employs about 4,400 workers in the city, where it has been based since 1849.
