Universal Pictures Has Best Year at Domestic Box Office

Tuesday, 25 September 2012 05:13 PM EDT

With $1.128 billion, Universal Pictures has already set a new record for itself at the North American box office, the studio announced on Tuesday.

The box office through Monday reached $1.128 billion, besting the $1.127 billion it made in all of 2008.

And it did it despite the failure of "Battleship."

"Ted," "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" were the studio's top 2012 cash cows.

And the studio still has four more films coming this year:

"Pitch Perfect," a college comedy starring Britney Snow and Anna Kendrick, opens on Oct. 5. Action-thriller "The Man With the Iron Fists," starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu, hits theaters on Nov. 2.

Judd Apatow's "This Is 40," which follows Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's married characters from "Knocked Up," opens on Dec. 21. And, finally, the highly anticipated screen adaptation of the musical "Les Misérables" (starring Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway) releases on Christmas.
