A divided U.S. government could reduce the possibility of new laws reigning in Facebook, Twitter, and other online platforms.
Axios reported that for the last two years, the biggest threat facing the tech companies was antitrust enforcement and regulations.
And although the threat remains, the election outcome suggests a divided government is less likely to pursue these measures, the website said.
Meanwhile, the divide is likely to continue the era of partisan attacks online, according to Axios, even as tech leaders had hoped the election would represent a peak in their political role.
And if Biden should win, it would mean a Democrat in the White House, a possible Republican Senate, a House controlled by Democrats and Donald Trump likely still being active on social media.
BuzzFeed News had reported that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had earlier told staffers he expected the platform’s efforts at limiting misinformation would ease after the election.
“Once we’re past these events, and we’ve resolved them peacefully, I wouldn’t expect that we continue to adopt a lot more policies that are restricting of a lot more content,” Zuckerberg said.
In September, Facebook had suspended accounts for multiple environment organizations, despite launching a program pledging to stop climate change misinformation less than a week earlier.
"Our systems mistakenly removed these accounts and content," a Facebook spokesperson said.
