Motorola Mobility is cutting jobs in Chicago as part of its ongoing integration with Lenovo Group Ltd., which bought the maker of mobile phones from Google Inc. two years ago.
Beijing-based Lenovo said the firings affect "less than 2 percent" of its global workforce of 55,000 people, according to a statement.
“Moto's Chicago office had more than 1,600 employees in March 2016, but the company did not say how many local employees it had before Monday's cuts,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
”Lenovo is absolutely committed to Chicago and we plan to maintain our Motorola Mobility headquarters there,” Lenovo said in a statement that didn't specify the number of cuts. “Chicago has a well-deserved reputation for technical excellence and as the hub of our global (research and development) for our smartphone business we expect to take advantage of local talent to continue developing Moto products there.”
Motorola used to employ 3,500 people, with most of them working in Chicago. Lenovo bought the company in 2014 and a year later cut 500 employees, a quarter of its Chicago workforce.
