Kaba Ilco Corp., a maker of security and lock systems, plans to close a factory in North Carolina and move jobs to Mexico. About 123 people will be fired, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
“The company expects the plant closing to take until 2018, in part because it is transferring production and many of the jobs to a Mexican plant,” the newspaper reported. “As such, it expects to file for federal worker benefits related to the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act.”
President-elect Donald Trump made saving manufacturing jobs a key part of his campaign platform, singling out companies such as Carrier Corp. and Ford Motor Co. for moving jobs to Mexico. He proposed fining employers that move U.S. jobs overseas.
"We’re disappointed to lose any jobs in our community," Gayle Anderson, president and chief executive of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, told the newspaper. She said the fired workers may be able to find jobs at other factories that are hiring.
